SoundCloud's users are facing a wave of changes, leaving many uncertain about the future of the platform.
The biggest splash came with the announcement of SCplanner's shutdown. This track reposting network, a popular tool for promotion amongst users, will be going dark after a two-month grace period. "After thorough analysis and review, we have made the difficult decision to sunset SCPlanner. This process will commence with a two-month grace period starting today, during which SCPlanner will continue to operate as well". SoundCloud cited limited resources and technical debt as reasons for shutting down SCplanner, leaving its users scrambling to find a new strategy.
This isn't the only change causing a stir. The minimum payout threshold for artists using SoundCloud For Artists is jumping from $5 to $25. While this means larger payouts, artists will receive them less frequently.
Adding to the uncertainty, SoundCloud has put itself up for sale with a hefty price tag of $1 billion. This comes after an 8% workforce reduction, a move aimed at increasing profitability.
With core features disappearing and monetization options changing significantly, many fear SoundCloud is heading for troubled waters. How these changes will ultimately affect users remains to be seen. Only time will tell where users of SCplanner will land and how the artist community will adapt to the new payout structure.
